ジョブズは盛田昭夫氏のSONYとその製品を溺愛していた。盛田氏とジョブズは、自社製品に関する高い完成度へのこだわりを共有していたと思われる。盛田氏に工場を案内されたジョブズは、とにかく心底感心してしまった。そのシミひとつない、工場を愛した。工場で働く人々の制服を愛した。そこにあるすべてに魅せられた。彼はSONYになりたかった。　盛田氏は25年前、ジョブズに初代のウォークマンをプレゼントした。それはジョブズがこれまで目にした事のない製品だった。なぜなら、そんなものはこの世に存在しないものだったから。そしてジョブズが最初にしたことは、もらったウォークマンをバラバラにして部品のひとつひとつを丹念に眺め、どうやってこの小さなコンポーネントにきれいに収まるのかを考えることだった。ジョブズはMacの工場を、SONYの工場を模倣するように構築した。彼はIBMにもMicrosoftにも興味はなかった。彼はただSONYになりたかった
